Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid delivered encouraging news about first-round draft pick Josh Simmons, confirming the offensive lineman will be ready to participate when training camp kicks off in July.
Road to Recovery Nears Its End
Simmons, who the Chiefs selected with the 32nd pick in this year’s draft, battled back from a torn patellar injury that cut short part of his 2024 campaign at Ohio State. While he’s been active in offseason workouts and participated in the team’s recent minicamp, those sessions operated under noncontact protocols – meaning his true test will come once full-contact drills begin at camp.
Reid spoke highly of the young player’s dedication throughout the recovery process. \”You can see his athleticism and desire,\” the veteran coach observed. \”He’s taken a great approach with extra effort on top of that. His rehab shows he’s determined to get back out on the field.\”
Roster Updates Across the Board
The Chiefs are also getting positive news about wide receiver Rashee Rice, who sat out most of last season nursing a knee injury. Rice has been cleared to participate in offseason activities and should be available when camp opens.
Meanwhile, the team addressed their left tackle situation by bringing in veteran free agent Jaylon Moore. Moore will battle for the starting role as the Chiefs look to solidify their offensive line protection.
Kelce’s Workload Remains Unchanged for Now
When asked about managing Travis Kelce’s workload – the All-Pro tight end will celebrate his 36th birthday this October – Reid indicated no immediate plans to scale back his star player’s involvement. \”He’s in great shape and eager to get going,\” Reid noted.
Still, the coach acknowledged he’s keeping a watchful eye on his veteran playmaker as the season unfolds. \”I keep a close eye on him because he may not recognize when aging catches up, but I will step in if necessary,\” Reid explained, showing the kind of protective instinct that’s helped extend careers throughout his coaching tenure.
These updates emerged as the Chiefs concluded their mandatory minicamp, officially shifting focus toward training camp and preparations for the 2025 NFL season.
