The Kansas City Chiefs will welcome back offensive tackle Josh Simmons at full strength when training camp opens this July, head coach Andy Reid announced. Simmons, who the Chiefs selected 32nd overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, spent months working his way back from a torn patellar injury that cut short his final season at Ohio State.

Recovery Timeline and Current Status

While sidelined by injury last year, Simmons has stayed busy throughout the offseason program and minicamp — though those sessions remain non-contact affairs. Reid has been impressed with what he’s seen from the rookie’s approach to rehabilitation, highlighting his commitment and professional attitude during the process. “His athletic gifts are obvious, and so is his hunger to get out there,” Reid explained. “The guy has put in serious work to reach this point, and you can tell he’s got the right makeup.”

Still, Reid acknowledges the real test comes when full-contact drills begin. “Once we strap on the pads and everything ramps up to game speed, that’s when we’ll really know where he stands,” the coach noted.

Other Key Personnel Updates

Wide receiver Rashee Rice, whose 2024 campaign was largely derailed by a knee injury, has also been cleared to participate in offseason activities and should be ready for camp. The Chiefs have also brought in veteran free agent Jaylon Moore, creating some competition for the open left tackle position.

Kelce’s Workload Management Plans

When asked about managing tight end Travis Kelce’s snap count this upcoming season, Reid seemed relatively unconcerned despite Kelce approaching his 36th birthday in October. The coach expects his star tight end to handle a similar workload to last season, pointing to Kelce’s excellent physical condition and enthusiasm for the game. “The man’s in phenomenal shape and chomping at the bit to get going,” Reid said.

That said, Reid plans to keep a watchful eye on his veteran throughout camp and into the regular season, ready to make adjustments if needed to preserve Kelce’s health and longevity.

“Look, I’m always monitoring him because Father Time is undefeated, even if Trav doesn’t want to admit it,” Reid said with a chuckle. “When the time comes to step in and make those tough calls for his own good, I will. But right now? He’s showing zero signs of decline.”
