The NFL dropped the hammer on Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice with a six-game suspension stemming from his March 2024 high-speed car wreck. At 25, Rice found himself facing serious consequences after pleading guilty last month to a pair of third-degree felony charges. Court documents paint a troubling picture: Rice was behind the wheel of a Lamborghini Urus, blazing down a Dallas highway at 119 mph when he triggered a devastating multi-vehicle pileup. What made matters worse? He bolted from the scene without stopping to check on injured victims.
His legal team tried to soften the blow. Attorney Royce West issued a July statement highlighting Rice’s apparent regret, noting \”a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages my actions caused.\” Rice publicly committed to making things right with everyone hurt in the collision.
The plea deal with Dallas County prosecutors required Rice to cover victims’ medical bills—$115,481.91—before entering his guilty plea. But that’s not the end of his financial obligations. According to a victim’s attorney, Rice still faces roughly $1 million in civil settlement payments.
Rice’s On-Field Impact and Injury History
Kansas City selected Rice in the second round of the 2023 draft after his standout SMU career. Last season started promisingly with 24 catches for 288 yards and two touchdowns across his first four appearances, but a devastating knee injury cut his rookie campaign short. Before that setback, Rice had emerged as the Chiefs’ go-to receiving option, racking up 79 receptions for 938 yards.
How Andy Reid and the Chiefs Will Adapt
Kansas City brass saw this suspension coming from miles away, so don’t expect any panic in their preparation. Coach Andy Reid already navigated similar waters when Rice went down with injury early last year. The Chiefs’ offense found its rhythm without him, cruising to an impressive 15-1 regular season before capturing their third straight Super Bowl appearance.
Rice’s absence hits during some crucial early-season battles. He’ll miss the Brazil opener against AFC West foe Los Angeles Chargers, plus heavyweight matchups with Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens, and Detroit Lions. Who Steps Up in Rice’s Place?
Two names jump out as prime candidates to shoulder Rice’s workload: Xavier Worthy and Jalen Royals, though Royals is currently nursing an injury.
Worthy seems primed for expanded duties, building on what he showed during Rice’s previous absence. While Kansas City prefers unleashing Worthy on deep routes when he’s at full strength, Rice’s suspension might push him into more underneath work where his blazing speed creates big plays after the catch.
Royals brings an intriguing skill set that mirrors Rice’s strengths. The fourth-round rookie possesses the physical tools and lower-body power Rice uses so effectively—fearless crossing routes and tough yards after contact. But there’s a snag: knee tendinitis has kept Royals off the practice field recently. Reid suggested the rookie might be sidelined for a while longer.
Even when healthy, Royals faces the steep learning curve every rookie receiver confronts. Both Rice and Worthy needed time to master the offensive system’s nuances during their first seasons. If Royals gets cleared medically, he’ll likely endure growing pains that come with the territory.
Reid might also lean heavily on his tight end arsenal—Travis Kelce, Noah Gray, and Jared Wiley—to bridge the gap until Rice’s October return.

Despite this setback, Rice’s Chiefs tenure looks secure moving forward. His five-year probation terms create strong incentives to stay out of trouble, since any slip-ups could trigger much harsher penalties.
