Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges stemming from a 2024 high-speed car crash, Dallas County officials confirmed. The charges encompass collision causing serious bodily injury and racing on a highway resulting in bodily injury.

Details of the Incident and Legal Proceedings

The charges stem from a multi-vehicle accident in 2024, when Rice crashed his Lamborghini in Dallas, setting off a chain-reaction collision that involved four other vehicles. League insiders suggest Rice will likely face a multi-game suspension following the sentencing.

The NFL released a statement confirming their ongoing review: “We have been closely monitoring all developments in the matter which remains under review.”

Through a plea agreement with the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office, Rice received five years of deferred probation and must serve 30 days in jail as a probation condition. He’s also required to cover the medical expenses of all victims involved, totaling more than $115,000.

Statement From Rice’s Legal Representation

Rice’s attorney, Royce West, issued a statement on his client’s behalf: “Last March, I was involved in a high-speed accident in Dallas. There have been many sleepless nights reflecting on the harm my actions caused. I will continue doing everything possible to ensure all affected parties are compensated fully. I urge everyone to obey speed limits, drive safely, and be responsible. Most importantly, I offer my sincere apologies for the injuries and damages caused to innocent drivers and their families.”

Investigation Findings and Aftermath

Police investigations revealed that Rice and his former Southern Methodist University teammate, Theodore Knox, were racing at high speeds in Rice’s Lamborghini and Knox’s Corvette when Rice struck the median wall. Both left the scene immediately after the crash. Two other drivers sustained minor injuries, while another vehicle’s two passengers were hospitalized with minor injuries.

Authorities issued an arrest warrant for Rice following the collision. He turned himself in the next day.

Additional Legal and NFL Context

Rice faced criminal accusations including aggravated assault, collision causing serious bodily injury, and six counts of collision involving injury, along with civil lawsuits filed by other drivers involved in the crash. Despite the incident, Rice was not placed on the NFL commissioner’s exempt list, with the league awaiting the case’s resolution before taking action.

During the 2023 NFL season, Rice played in 16 games as a rookie before his season ended early with a torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee sustained in Week 4. The Chiefs drafted him in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
