Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown has agreed to waive his extradition rights and will return to Miami to face charges related to an attempted murder case, officials confirmed Friday.
Detainment and Legal Proceedings
Brown, 37, was held at the Essex County Jail in New Jersey after being apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. During a brief court appearance on Friday, he waived extradition, paving the way for his transfer to Florida where he faces legal action.
Carmen Martin, spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, confirmed that \”Brown remains in the Essex County Jail awaiting pickup by Florida authorities.\”
Details of the Incident
The arrest warrant alleges that Brown grabbed a handgun from a security guard following a celebrity boxing event on May 16. Prosecutors claim he fired two shots at a man, identified as Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, after a prior fistfight. Nantambu reportedly suffered a graze wound to the neck.
Surveillance footage that surfaced on social media shows Brown holding the firearm and advancing toward Nantambu on the walkway, firing two shots at close range. The video captures Nantambu ducking after the first shot.
Brown wasn’t arrested that night because authorities hadn’t immediately identified Nantambu as a victim. It wasn’t until May 21 that Nantambu provided a complete police statement naming Brown as the shooter.
Background and Current Status
Brown had been living in Dubai for several months before his arrest, as evidenced by his social media activity. The reasons behind the delay in his arrest and his transfer to New Jersey rather than Miami remain unclear. Records don’t specify whether Brown has secured legal representation.
In a post following the confrontation, Brown claimed he acted in self-defense after being \”jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm\” to him.
Charges and Potential Penalties
Florida authorities have charged Brown with second-degree attempted murder, a felony that carries a maximum prison sentence of 15 years and a possible fine up to $10,000 if convicted.
NFL Career and Legal Troubles
Antonio Brown enjoyed a 12-year NFL career, most notably with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He racked up 928 receptions, over 12,000 receiving yards, and 83 touchdowns, earning seven Pro Bowl selections. Brown also played a key role in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV, where he caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Tom Brady.
Yet his career was plagued by off-field issues, including allegations of battery against a moving-truck driver, domestic violence accusations, failure to pay child support, and a notorious incident in 2021 when he abruptly left a game by removing his jersey and shoulder pads, leading to his release from Tampa Bay.
Brown’s waiver of extradition marks the next significant development in his ongoing legal challenges.
