“Not Again…”
That is exactly what Mike Glennon had to be thinking after the Bears traded up to draft Mitch Trubisky with the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Glennon went through a similar situation in Tampa Bay. He played all but three games his rookie year (2013), then faced a drop in playing time in 2014. Then the Buccaneers drafted Jameis Winston first overall in 2015, and Glennon hardly ever saw the field in Tampa Bay again.
Now here we sit in 2017. There seems to be a divide between NFL experts on if that was a good pick or not. A good amount of arguments defend Glennon in that the people want to know why the Bears signed him if they were going to draft a quarterback. Apparently, Glennon feels something similar.
In fact, he feels, “cheated.” … Lovely, another selfish quarterback for the Bears to put up with.
Now Don’t Get Me Wrong…
I understand why he feels cheated. The Bears have shortened that possible three-year window, to maybe two at the most in a best case scenario for Glennon. It has to be a disheartening feeling to know that you’re only there temporarily, not as a long-term option. Plus, this isn’t the first time that Glennon is facing this either, so it has to be increasingly frustrating for him.
Or he could look at this from the other perspective. He has been through something similar once, what did he learn? How can he take what he learned from the Tampa Bay situation and apply it here? In very rare occasions does life ever just hand things over to someone without a little challenge.
This is still Glennon’s team in 2017, if he wants that long-term shot, he needs to take this opportunity by the horns and make the most of it. He needs to keep his nose in the playbook, on the practice field,Ā and in the film room, showing that he wants to be a winner for this organization. Then on Sunday’s, make sure all that preparation doesn’t go by the wayside.
If Glennon can help deliver more wins to the Bears organization, he has a chance to become that long term option. However, by rolling over and feeling, “cheated” he’s not giving himself that chance. He’s putting his own agenda before the team’s. The Bears just dumped their last self-centered quarterback, I can’t imagine they would want to hang on to another one for much longer.
The Question is Mr. Glennon…
When your phone rings on opening weekend, and you see it’s adversity calling … will you answer the call and make the most of your shortened opportunity, and give yourself a chance?
Will you have done enough to challenge the Bears organization to question their second overall pick? Or will you ignore the call and only do what is asked beforeĀ handing the ball off to the next guy?
I would like to think that after facing this once, Glennon will not let another opportunity slip away. Only the 2017 season will be able to provide us with those answers.
Hated this pick and not still certain it was a great pick. I had wanted to trade back and pick up picks but instead, we go with who Pace thinks was the best QB on the board. I have Mahomes as the best but Trubiski is his guy. I don’t see the ability to make great plays when things break down as I do in Mahomes. Besides that I think Glennon has the makings of being a franchise Qb. So let’s compare Mariota 2015
Tennessee Titans G-12 A-370 C-230 PCT-62.2 A/G 30.8 YRD 2,818 AVG 7.6 YPG 234.8 TD 19 TD%5.1 INT 10 INT% 2.7 L61T Sacks 38 SYDS 258 QBR 91.5
Glennon Tampa Bay Buccaneers G-13 ATT 416 Comp 247 PCT 59.4 A/G 32.0 YRDS 2,608 AVG 6.3 YPG 200.6 TD 19 TD% 4.6 9 INT% 2.2 LG85T sacks 40 SYRDS 314 QBR 83.9
Winston G-16 ATT 535 C 312 C% 58.3 33.4 4,042 AVG 7.6 YPG 252.6 TD 22 TD% 4.1 INT 15 INT%2.8 LG 68 sacks 27 SYRDS 190 84.2
So Glennon’s rookie year was right up there with the top two QB’s picked at 1nad 2 in 2015. Don’ t be so certain he loses his job to Trubiski. The Bears may find themselves in a very good situation for once. Having two quality QB’s When a starting QB goes down as they always do the value of either one will skyrocket and they will be compensated far above what they gave up. Tarik Cohen surprised me but not the direction I had T,J, Logan picked here. You can be sure that Cohen will be tried at return duties with his big hands and catching ability. Getting the top QB pick without giving up a number one is rare even when moving up just one spot. They didn’t give up too much. They don’t have a true number one RC but so what that have plenty of good RC’s to go to and I expect Cam Meridith will take a huge jump this year. If Trubiski does sit the entire year then the Bears have definitely won this draft because that means Glennon performed very well.
Donald McKendree,
Don’t be quick to judge Trubisky’s pocket presence and ability to make plays when things break down. Plenty of times on film he shows the fluidity to move throughout the pocket and create space when protection isn’t the best. Watch the stanford game for quality examples of how he can be great and how he is clearly a project. The last throw he made to bring the tar heels to within 2 points of tying the game is a great example. The play called for him to roll right, but a stanford defender was right on his heels. Trubisky spun around to avoid the sack (the end of the game if that happened) and rifled an absolute laser through traffic to find his receiver. Most college Qbs do not have the athleticism, awareness, or arm strength to make that throw.
Also, I had Mahomes as my number 2 QB on my board. The only thing separating him and Trubisky was that Mahomes is sooo much more raw despite playing for longer. Mahomes’s mechanics are pretty horrible, and tbh I don’t know how he was as accurate as he was especially on those deep throws. He does show a knack for making things happen when protections break down, but all in all he has so much further to go than Trubisky. He didn’t make any pre snap reads, didn’t have to go through full field progressions, wasn’t taught adequate mechanics, and I can go on and on. He’s got tremendous talent and athleticism, but he should not see any playing time for at least two years. Luckily, he landed in KC with one of the best QB coaches of this era along with a veteran QB who is good enough to keep him on the bench.
I also expect White and Bullard to make a big jump in performance so staying healthy is the key. If they stay healthy they can compete with the Packers who I think had a great draft by picking two of the players I had hoped to draft. Kevin King or Obi Melinfonwu and Josh Jones. Note I do agree Mahomes would have been my pick at #3 then Melinfonwu and Josh jones or Derek Rivers.
Obifonwu over Shaeen. Wormly won’t be any better than Bullard so I am glad we didn’t pick him. But Adam will start before the year ends. They will be a major running team and use two TE’s a lot. Quickness is not the problem just coaching. He is an excellent receiver and a good route runner and a 32″ vert. not bad for a 6’6 280 lb TE.
The Bears improved tremendously just by replacing Cutler with Glennon. They will score much more than they did last year.
