Tony Allen, the former Memphis Grizzlies defensive specialist, found himself in handcuffs Wednesday after Arkansas deputies discovered cocaine in a vehicle during a routine traffic stop in Poinsett County.
Details of the Traffic Stop and Charges
The 43-year-old Allen now confronts two drug possession charges stemming from the incident on Interstate 555, about 50 miles northwest of Memphis. Authorities pulled over a vehicle driven by 33-year-old William Hatton from Memphis, with Allen riding as a passenger.
Deputies initially discovered what appeared to be marijuana on Allen’s person during the stop. A more thorough search of the vehicle turned up a cigarette package containing white powder, which testing confirmed was cocaine.
Allen’s Basketball Legacy
Allen made his mark during six seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies (2011-2017), anchoring the defense for the franchise’s famous Core Four era. The Boston Celtics selected him in the 2004 draft straight out of Oklahoma State, and he wrapped up his playing days with the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Grizzlies honored Allen’s contributions by retiring his No. 9 jersey in March 2025, placing him alongside Core Four teammates Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph in the rafters. Mike Conley, the group’s remaining member, continues his NBA career with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Past Legal Troubles
This arrest marks Allen’s second brush with federal law enforcement in recent years. Back in August 2023, he entered a guilty plea in connection with an NBA health insurance fraud scheme. That case resulted in community service requirements and three years of supervised probation.
