Deandre Ayton finds himself back on the open market after reaching a contract buyout with the Portland Trail Blazers, catching many around the league off guard. ESPN’s Shams Charania broke the news of this unexpected turn for the big man.
Strong Numbers Despite Shortened Portland Tenure
The 26-year-old center put together respectable production during his time in Portland, posting 14.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.0 blocks per contest while connecting on an impressive 56.6 percent of his field goal attempts. This represented his sophomore campaign with the Trail Blazers after arriving in 2023 via the complex three-way deal that also sent Damian Lillard to Milwaukee.
Mutual Parting Opens New Doors
According to Charania’s reporting, the buyout creates fresh possibilities for Ayton while allowing Portland to prioritize their emerging frontcourt talent. The former top pick was slated to earn $35.6 million in the final year of his current deal before both sides agreed to part ways.
Phoenix Chapter Appears Permanently Closed
Don’t expect a homecoming in the desert. Despite Ayton’s history as Phoenix’s No. 1 overall selection in 2018 and his role in their memorable 2021 Finals run, PHNX Sports’ Gerald Bourguet reports the Suns harbor “zero interest” in bringing back their former cornerstone. That leaves the rest of the league to evaluate what the athletic center might bring to their roster.
Young Talent Squeeze Forced Portland’s Hand
The writing was on the wall once Portland made their draft selections. The organization invested heavily in future frontcourt pieces, selecting Donovan Clingan seventh overall in 2024 and following up with Yang Hansen at pick 16 this past summer. With Robert Williams III and Duop Reath already occupying roster spots, the numbers simply didn’t add up for consistent playing time for a player of Ayton’s caliber and salary expectations.
