Two juveniles now face charges after the tragic death of 16-year-old Xyere Brooks, a standout sophomore football player at KIPP High School in Camden, New Jersey. A 12-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy have been arrested by authorities in connection with the fatal shooting that stunned the local community.
Details of the Incident
The shooting occurred on June 6th inside a residence on Thorn Street in Camden. Around 12:35 p.m., Camden County police officers responded to emergency calls about gunfire. When they arrived at the scene, they found Brooks with a gunshot wound and immediately transported him to Cooper University Hospital. Medical teams worked to save his life, but Brooks succumbed to his injuries at 2:15 p.m.
Investigation Findings
The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office revealed that several juveniles were present in the house when the shooting took place. During their investigation, detectives determined that the 16-year-old male had brought a gun into the residence. The weapon was later handled by the 12-year-old girl from Wilmington, Delaware, who recklessly discharged the weapon, causing Brooks’ fatal wound.
Charges Filed
Both juveniles turned themselves in to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday. The 12-year-old girl now faces charges of second-degree manslaughter and second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon. The 16-year-old boy has been charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.
